Energy saving

CARRIÈRES UNIES DE PORPHYRE

At all the company’s levels, we are committed to pay special attention to our environment. Energy saving is part of our commitments to reduce our carbon footprint.

To better control our consumption, the collection of energy data is a crucial starting point. It allows us to engage in actions aiming at reducing the energy consumption at each extraction site, such as the optimisation of distances covered by our rolling equipment, the implementation of alternative energy sources, … All these actions also contribute to the reduction of our CO2 emissions.

A few examples of our developments
LESSINES Site: Photovoltaic panels

One of our first developments has been one of the largest photovoltaic parks in Wallonia at our Lessines site. These facilities allow for the production of aggregate and are very energy-intensive and our aim was to covert part of our energy requirements through renewable energy. We chose to install photovoltaic panels since we had the space available. The electricity produced is directly used to power the installations. The part used by CUP is about 73%, the balance being returned to the network when the systems have been shut down.  Through these 17312 panels placed over 7.5 ha we are able to cover 36% of our annual consumption. With this project we save the equivalent of 1555 tons of CO2 every year. We can also compare this environmental gain to 155 ha of planted forest.

BIERGHES Site

Following the steps taken in Lessines, we also decided to invest in the same type of installation over 3 ha: 5420 panels. It works in the same way our Lessines site does and covers 40% of our annual consumption. We save the equivalent of 515 tons of CO2 every year. We may also compare this environmental gain to 52 ha of planted forest.

BAILEUX Site

Our third site will follow the same energy saving path with the imminent installation of 1752 panels that will cover 40% of the annual consumption. With this project we will be able to save the equivalent of 515 tons of CO2 per year. We may also compare this environmental gain to 52 ha of planted forest.
